Raising A Geek: The Ongoing Mission

April 3, 2018 -

Holy cow. Rereading my Raising a Geek post has made me realize that I should pull out my old Piers Anthony Xanth books, because she'd probably really like those at her age. And it's funny when I re-read Parenthood, Toys, and Games, realizing that so many of the things I mention looking forward to have already come to pass.

As I've reviewed my age-categorized kids' movie lists, I'm now realizing that maybe 50% of the movies I list I won't be pushing them to watch. This is partially because I now have a better perspective on which movies my kids will enjoy. I still haven't been able to get them to try Space Camp, and something like Karate Kid feels specifically tied to male bullying, which is physical, and I've got two girls.

Lia, who's about to turn 11, has been really enjoying Star Trek: The Next Generation, and we're nearly done with the first season. We had tried Farscape, but it didn't grab her. Perhaps we'll try again in a few years.

Lia watched the original Jurassic Park with us, which is the first genuinely scary movie I think she's ever seen. She's got a firm grip on the fact that it's just a movie, but I think she was still a bit rattled. I'm thinking that next up is Apollo 13, and maybe The Goonies after that. Meanwhile, the whole family is loving Steven Universe.

Lia played Portal to completion and loved it. I've installed Portal 2 for her, but as of yet she's only played the multiplayer levels with me, and has yet to start the actual game. Minecraft has been and remains strongly a thing.

Ella, who recently turned 6, is too young for a lot of this. She was terrified of Darth Vader in New Hope, and borderline traumatized when she caught a bit of a Thor movie. But she's loving Scribblenauts, and plays Mariokart, LittleBigPlanet, and Mario Party probably too often.

Next up for Ella is probably Avatar: The Last Airbender. Our whole family watched the series once before, but she was so young that there's no way she'll remember it. It still might be a bit too soon, but it shouldn't be long before she should be able to understand the basic thread of the plotline.
