A Curated Digest Of My Facebook Posts: Children and Family

April 16, 2019 - -

When I originally downloaded everything from my Facebook account before deleting it, I was originally just going to post a bunch of non-family stuff. But since this site is largely about archiving stuff for my own later reference, I figured I might as well post all the cute stuff my kids said here as well.

This is a collection of things I posted about my kids and family between 2008 and 2013, when I used Facebook. It's in reverse chronological order, since I'm too lazy to manually reverse it, so as you read through these, we'll be traveling back in time.

Oct 29, 2013, 7:17 PM

Lia has just proudly proclaimed to me that she is a nerd.

An early proud moment for me when she was just six years old.

Jan 16, 2013, 7:16 AM

Lia's reaction to finding out that school is closed today: a whispered, stunned "what?" As if such a possibility had never occurred to her. Baby's first snow day.

She would have been in Kindergarten at the time.

Nov 21, 2012, 12:49 PM

Lia has invented a state: Hiota

A combination of Iowa and Hawaii, perhaps?

Oct 21, 2012, 10:06 AM

Another Lia moment, last night while crying over bedtime: "This is dreadful!"

Early advanced vocab coming out in a moment of distress.

Oct 6, 2012, 3:26 PM

SCENE : Lia is coloring, music is playing. Enter Greg. Greg: "Lia, what do you think of this song?" Lia: "I don't care about songs. I care about work. Work has to be done."

If only she felt that industrious about homework now that she's nearly 12. Not that I did half as well as she does now when I was in school.

Sep 25, 2012, 6:27 PM

Lia thinks you need to be 80 years old to drive a car.

I think Ella had a similar comment when she got to be the same age.

Sep 23, 2012, 9:22 AM

Clapping is Ella's new thing. We found her in her crib this morning sitting up and clapping, presumably for herself.

It's a wonderland of new things when a baby is in her first year.

Sep 21, 2012, 9:01 AM

Lia woke up this morning late, went into the living room, crawled under the side table with her blankie, and fell back asleep.

Kids.

Aug 31, 2012, 4:55 PM

Second day of school, and Lia is upset that she didn't get homework.

That's my Lia. I used to have to give her homework over summer break. How things have changed.

Aug 23, 2012, 7:29 AM

Having breakfast with Lia and her doll 344TenGik.

The doll was named that because my friend Rich suggested it, based on the serial number on the doll's tag.

Aug 15, 2012, 7:16 AM

My current favorite Lia mispronunciation: /pee-gwis/ This is, of course, a pegasus. (She's playing Super Scribblenauts HD, wherein you type a word and the object appears, to help you solve a puzzle)

I played the heck out of Scribblenauts back when I had a Nintendo DS, never suspecting that it'd be such a great way for both of my kids to learn spelling.

Aug 11, 2012, 6:51 PM

Hearing some Ernestine Anderson music for what I imagine was the first time, Lia called Goin' to Chicago "Robot music". Nice.

It's some of my favorite music to dance to. And we're not doing the robot.

Aug 10, 2012, 8:33 PM

At a party. Lia is telling people about the Mars rover. That's my girl.

Another proud dad moment.

Aug 1, 2012, 7:35 PM

Lia ate close to a half pound of salmon for dinner tonight.

At age five. She's a big eater when she gets a food she really likes.

Jun 14, 2012, 7:30 PM

My daughter is eating peas with a knife.

Yeah - that one was weird.

Apr 28, 2012, 7:29 AM

We are driving around visiting tale sags this morning, as Lia calls them.

I still remember that morning, driving around to tag sales, and hitting a diner afterwards. Great spring weekend day.

Apr 23, 2012, 7:46 PM

Lia asked me if she could be a ninja when she grows up.

Not exactly a promising career.

Mar 27, 2012, 7:10 AM

I can hear Lia in her room reading her dictionary. She's in the B's, which means she started at the beginning.

Yes. She read the kids' dictionary cover-to-cover.

Feb 28, 2012, 10:25 PM

Perhaps the sweetest thing I have ever heard is the song my four year old made up for my two week old. "The world is so great / You will always be safe"

I remember this too. She was welcoming her baby sister to the world, and introducing her to it.

Jan 16, 2012, 7:16 AM

During a talk about the pronunciation of the word "Madagascar", Lia got irritated and told me "I'm not having this conversation anymore."

Hey. It's a hard word when you're four.

Dec 12, 2011, 3:44 PM

I love that Lia's letter to Santa begins "Dear Santa, I love you"

Both my kids wrote to Santa and the Tooth Fairy like that, I think.

Dec 7, 2011, 6:36 PM

Linda mentioned something about three weeks. Lia was quiet for a bit, then said "that's twenty-one days!"

Ella did the same thing when she was old enough. Math came easy to them both.

Dec 1, 2011, 7:25 AM

Lia just informed me that December is after November, and Spectember is after December.

Spectember is a special month.

Nov 17, 2011, 7:12 PM

Lia just asked me the difference between comets and meteors.

Lots of parents get annoyed at all the why questions. I always loved them. It's how kids learn. This question was particularly insightful, and we looked it up together.

Oct 28, 2011, 2:46 PM

You know what's awesome about bring a father? I'll explain something to Lia, teaching her something about the world, and then she thanks me for showing her.

A super-feel-good parent moment.

Sep 1, 2011, 7:22 PM

While I was giving Lia a bath, she surprised me by counting to 100. I did not know that she could do that. After she was done, she told me "I don't do that very often."

It's a big day when you take the time to count that high, eh?

Aug 30, 2011, 6:48 PM

Walking through the grocery store. Lia is reading the directions on the box of brown rice.

Anything to get more reading in.

Jul 20, 2011, 7:28 AM

I just got told that I'm the best daddy in the whole Commadikit state.

Hey - it's a tough state to pronounce.

Apr 6, 2011, 7:06 PM

Tonight, at the grocery store, Lia learned about static electricity. She told me she didn't want to touch any metal because she didn't want to get a shark.

Shopping with a child brings the experience from rote to endearing.

Mar 2, 2011, 7:28 AM

This morning, lia won't stop singing Christmas carols.

It was March.

Jan 27, 2011, 7:35 AM

Lia stopped me as I was leaving the house this morning. She told me that if I go to California again I should watch out for volcanoes.

I'd been to Sacramento on a business trip. Not sure where she'd heard about volcanoes.

Jan 22, 2011, 1:33 PM

Eating Cheerios, Lia was actually just saying "Om nom nom"

Like, an honest-to-goodness nom nom.

Jan 17, 2011, 6:59 PM

Lia overheard a passing woman in the grocery store speaking Spanish and yelled out "She's speaking Spanish!" Then we had a conversation with the woman.

At age three, it was very exciting for her to encounter a genuine foreign language out in the field.

Jan 1, 2011, 8:31 PM

Lia had named her new stuffed animal: Kennest

We still have that giant stuffed dog, and I love that name. It's not Kenneth, it's Kennest.

Nov 27, 2010, 10:07 PM

Insanely proud of my Lia. We just gave her a copy of “Green Eggs and Ham” and she read the book virtually unaided, cover to cover. I'm amazed. She's 3 & a half.

She really did start reading early. I've often misremembered her first reading experience as being just before she turned three, but this was it.

Nov 24, 2010, 9:39 PM

“Don't smile at me; I'll clobber you.” -Nato Micale quote of the evening.

Wow. A quote that's not from one of my children. This is my wife's father. I endeavor to be like him some day.

Nov 20, 2010, 7:10 PM

Lia is sitting in the back seat playing. Her feet are having a conversation with each other.

Kids.

Oct 28, 2010, 6:02 PM

A 2-year-old just told my daughter to pull up her pants. It was good advice.

And Lia was three.

Oct 6, 2010, 4:30 PM

Lia just told me that she's going to laugh and sing when I come back.

Greeting from young children can be even better than those from puppies.

Sep 23, 2010, 7:49 AM

My poor little girl seems to be having a recurring dream about a robot trying to eat her.

I remember this. I put a pin on the curtain in her room and told her it would protect her from the robot in her dream.

Sep 14, 2010, 11:47 PM

This morning, Lia woke up and told me she was glad that the robot didn't eat her. She'd had a bad dream. Right now, she's in Colorado. I miss my girls.

This was a rough time. I was away from Linda and Lia during the move from Colorado to Connecticut. I think that's what prompted the robot dreams.

May 13, 2010, 10:54 PM

Lia introduced me to the grocery store clerk tonight as her friend, Daddy.

Hey - if you can't be friends with your two-year-old...

May 5, 2010, 5:48 PM

Lia doesn't know HOW to walk to the kitchen! Her legs are too tall! Not sure what that means.

Yeah. She said this.

Oct 10, 2009, 9:54 PM

Lia just told me that she's scared: you have to be quiet in the dark cause George Bush will come get you.

The Bush years were a fearful time. No idea where she got this one though.

Sep 30, 2009, 8:07 PM

Lia thought the singular form of "box" was "bock". I told her it was "boxes", and now she's saying "bockises".

Makes sense to me...

Aug 9, 2009, 8:01 PM

Lia just dug around in the grocery bag, found a tomato, started saying "Yummy apple. Yummy apple." and took a bite out of the tomato. She winced, made a disgusted face, and said "Mmm. Good."

Ella did the same thing with a banana years later.

Aug 4, 2009, 9:36 AM

Lia just handed me a toy with dead batteries and asked me to fickits.

That was a common Lia-ism. Fickits was fix it, and a band-aid was abandon. There's an age where only parents can interpret what a child is saying.

Jun 23, 2009, 8:36 PM

is listening to Lia sing "Who is sleeping, who is sleeping, in the john? in the john?"

...and she had no idea that it meant the bathroom.

Mar 31, 2009, 2:22 PM

is sad that Lia just had a really nasty run-in with a cactus.

I also remember this. She faceplanted on a scrub cactus and had dozens of tiny hairlike needles in her hands and forehead.

Nov 19, 2008, 8:38 PM

is working while Lia brings me every item from our bathroom cabinet one at a time.

Kids do this.
