My Favorite 2021 Movies

December 20, 2021 -

Nowadays, the number of movies available on streaming is dizzying. So I've cut the list down to a dozen, which I'm again listing in the order I watched them.

Space Sweepers (Netflix) - A fun little Korean space opera which ended up being far better than it had any right to be. Don't think too hard about the logistics of the future in which they exist, because it doesn't really hold up, but the characters are pretty good, and I liked it enough that I went back and watched it again a few months after I'd first seen it.

Boss Level (Hulu) - Frank Grillo, who you might best know as Brock Rumlow from the MCU, stars in this film. It's remniscent of Edge of Tomorrow, in that the day keeps repeating every time he dies. It's goofy, it's fun, I liked it. Despite Mel Gibson.

Stowaway (Netflix) - This is the kind of made-during-pandemic, low-budget film I'd have expected to forget about the week after watching, but somehow I just really liked it. The premise? A mission to Mars with just enough air and water for its three crewmembers discovers that it has an unexpected fourth. They need to make a difficult decision or else all of them die. Stars Anna Kendrick and Daniel Dae Kim. What I love about the movie is that unlike so many other similar films, the crew never has a member that goes crazy or betrays everyone. People get emotional, because how could you not? But they ultimately keep their wits about them.

Chaos Walking - Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley make for a great cast, but somehow it still ended up being just a ho-hum movie, despite a really interesting sci-fi premise.

The Tomorrow War (Amazon) - Big budget Tom Cruise sci-fi film. Oh wait, it wasn't Tom Cruise? That's right, it was Chris Pratt. I liked it, although it's not the kind of movie I'd have paid to see in a theater. Still, it was nice to see Yvonne Strahovski in something - haven't seen much of her since Chuck.

Black Widow (Disney+) - A too-late tribute to Scarlett Johansson's Avenger. Florence Pugh and David Harbour were both great as well.

Fear Street (Netflix) - I don't generally like horror films, but this three-part movie series was flat-out excellent.

Shang Chi (Disney+) - A great new Marvel film, and some great new characters who I look forward to seeing rolled into the greater MCU.

Red Notice (Netflix) - Stupid and fun. Ryan Reynolds is generally good, but the film was funny largely because of the dialogue and the ridiculous things he said.

Parasite (Hulu) - Parasite is one of those films I'd been meaning to see for a while. After having seen it, it's like a Coen Brothers film - just one big disaster that keeps getting worse. Good movie.

Eternals (Theater) - The Eternals is a somewhat different direction for the MCU. Huge cast, less black and white. I look forward to seeing it again once it's out on home video.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (Theater) - I actually haven't seen it yet, but I'm listing it here because I will see it with a week, and that's still 2021.
