Earworms

January 17, 2023 -

As I may have mentioned to you if you know me, I've got a song playing in my head in the background pretty much 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even when I'm asleep. A lot of times, I won't even consciously notice it until I stop to think about it, but the music is always there.

I think most people get earworms of some kind, and mine are likely no different, but twice in the past couple weeks, I've gotten a song stuck in my head, and that same song has hung on for over a full week. So I decided to write up a post about these two songs.

The first one is From a Window Seat, by Dawes. I stumbled across the band a while back on Spotify when playing a random mix. I liked their song All Your Favorite Bands. But From a Window Seat would randomly pop up, and at some point, it stuck. It's really just about a guy taking a commercial flight. But damn, the song is catchy.

My second earworm song is a far older one. The first time I remember hearing it is when BBC Music put out the below video a few years back.

I immediately recognized Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Brian May, and of course Brian Wilson in the video. I also knew Pharell Williams only from his association with Daft Punk.

But it wasn't until fairly recently when I was looking for something different that I found myself playing Sail On Sailor on Spotify while working, and that led to other Beach Boys tunes. I was immediately struck by the insane key changes in God Only Knows, and I had to run upstairs to the keyboard in order to try and wrap my head around the melody. It took me a number of ten-minute sessions pinging away at the old black-and-white keys over the next week. That's generally my attention span for these things.

But then the song stayed. I'm still humming it this afternoon.
