Here's my first major year-end list for 2024: The video games I've played this year. A bunch of them are re-plays, and I've left out games like Slay the Spire and Sentinels of the Multiverse, which I continue to play regularly and enjoy. Going back to the beginning of the year, here's what I played in 2024.
Resident Evil 4 - The last time I played this one, I lived in Colorado and played the game on a Playstation 2. The PC port was well-done, unlike many other PC ports I've tried. I played the game start to finish, and very much enjoyed it.
Alan Wake 2 - I really liked the first Alan Wake game, and I really wanted to like this one. I may have liked it, too, if not for the constant crashes that prevented me from playing. I actually bought a new video card for this game, but that wasn't enough to get it to run well on my PC.
Gloomhaven Digital - After my tabletop Gloomhaven game went kaput, I dived into the digital version, which is very fun. But it's hard. Maybe I'm not thinking strategically enough, but I'm really just not good at this game. It doesn't stop me from enjoying it though.
XCOM 2 - I've finished the game at least three times, but it's just so good. I spend a decent amount of time this year back in the saddle with XCOM 2, trying out some new mods and generally having a good time.
Robot Rally - I've loved the tabletop game Robo Rally for years. This year, I found an android game that is effectively a digital version. And it's fun.
Baldurs Gate 3 - By far, Baldurs Gate 3 is the game I spent the most time with this year. I went through the game, start-to-finish, three times. My first run, I played Astarion, and he became my least favorite NPC. I had him turn evil and basically take over the world. Jerk. The second run, I played a good-guy bard and tried to do all the things right that I'd done wrong the first time through. The final run, I played the "Dark Urge", and went evil again. I also tried to mop up a bunch of achievements I'd been missing. Still, there's a ton left to do in the game, and I know I'll go back to Baldur's Gate 3 at some point.
Dome Keeper - After a friend suggested it, I tried Dome Keeper, which is a combination resource gathering and tower defense without actual towers type game. The enemies come in waves, and you've got to mine and gather resources, then periodically rush back to the surface to fight off attackers. There are tech trees and lots of different items, but that's the game in a nutshell. It's fun, although I've decided that playing on the more difficult level is just not for me.
That's my 2024 in gaming.
