IGN's Top 100 Games of all time

December 3, 2007 -

IGN is just finishing up its yearly list of the Top 100 Games of all time, and I feel obliged to comment on certain games in its list, as I've played a lot of them.

#100: Archon - I had this game on my Commodore 64 back in the day, and I loved it. It's still my all-time favorite Battle Chess variant.

#90: Okami - I hear nothing but good things about Okami, but as of right now, I'm waiting for the Wii version.

#87: Advance Wars - I played this game and its sequel on the GBA, and I'm now playing its DS sequel. For a handheld, they're simply the best RTS games around.

#83: World of Warcraft - Ha! Take that, stupid MMO players. Your flagship game is only number 83.

#76: Final Fantasy 7 - Wow! Final Fantasy 7 is only #76? I'm surprised, I thought this was supposed to be an amazing game. Although I've never played it...

#73: Resident Evil - I'd have probably put this one a bit higher, although not as high as Resident Evil 2, which isn't even on this list.

#72: Mechwarrior 2 - Here's a game I really enjoyed. I think I've still got a copy somewhere.

#71: Planescape: Torment - I didn't enjoy this game nearly as much as everyone else. I got probably two thirds of the way through before I decided I was done.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - the only game in the franchise I've played. Of course, I was playing a bad PC port and I had to stop when I just couldn't get past a boss battle late in the game.

#68: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - only game on the list I outright hated. I wanted to like it, I really did. But you can only fall to your death so many times.

#65: Thief 2: The Metal Age - while I loved the third Thief game, I couldn't get into either of the first two.

#58: Mike Tyson's Punchout - Aww yeah. First game I bought on the Wii's virtual console. While I could never get past Soda Popinski, I had a lot of fun with this. One of the NES's best titles.

#47: God of War - One of my favorite PS2 games. And the PS2 probably has more good games and good game franchises than any other console out there.

#43: Baldurs Gate II - Nearly a decade old, and it's what I'll be playing when I go home tonight. The game has aged amazingly well, and to me is still the best RPG ever made. Should be much higher on this list.

#42: The Legend of Zelda - Sure I've played Zelda. Years later, I went back and played it again on a PC emulator. Of course, I never beat Ganon, but I got up to Ganon. He wasn't very friendly.

#36: Grim Fandango - I've got to go back and play this one again sometime. I never got very far. I got completely stuck.

#33: Fallout - I love the Fallout series. I even loved Fallout: Tactics, but that's the stealth game enthusiast in me. I loved ducking, crawling, and moving all my guys into the perfect ambush spots before popping up and blasting everyone in sight.

#29: Dragon Warrior - Yeah. I played it. I think I went back and replayed this one on an emulator too. And it was indeed a fantastic game. Taloon trips! (or was that a sequel?)

#28: Warcraft 2 - I played this game quite a lot. In some ways, it was better than Warcraft 3. I never liked the fact that they got rid of water units, and the whole Hero characters thing never quite hit me right.

#27: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - I was never as big a fan of this as everyone else. The big reveal at the end was nice, but the combat system was just like Neverwinter Nights, and that didn't thrill me.

#26: Half-Life - For its time, a great game. I still prefer its sequel.

#24: Street Fighter 2 - The best fighting game of all time. This reached a pinncale with Super Street Fighter 2 turbo, and went downhill with the stupid cartoonized Alpha variants. Air blocks are for wimps.

#20: Metal Gear Solid - I've never played the original on the Playstation, but I got my copy off EBay recently, and I may go give it a shot someday. I've played the second game, and I've got a copy of the third which I'll try soon.

#16: Shadow of the Colossus - Here's another with which I heartily agree. I don't think I'd have put it higher than 16, but it was a great game and this is a good spot for it. (my review)

#15: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - I might have actually put this one higher. I've got a copy at home, and I'll agree that this is the best Castlevania game ever made, although I also enjoyed Castlevania 3 quite a lot.

#14: Pirates! - This is the 1987 version of the game, not the recent remake. I spent tons of time in my summers during high school playing this game on the Commodore 64.

#11: Starcraft - Along with the Infinity Engine games and Street Fighter, probably the only old game of which I'll never get tired. A decade old, Starcraft is still the best RTS of all time.

#10: Resident Evil 4 - I was playing this one again last weekend. It's hard to say whether I like this or Resident Evil 2 better, but the update in the game engine certainly revitalized the series, and I'm considering buying the Wii version of Resident Evil 4. Fantastic game. (my review)

#8: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - I probably played about half of this game on a PC emulator nearly a decade ago, and it was fun. I don't think it'd be in my top ten though.

#6: Half-Life 2 - I probably would've put this game even higher. It might be my #1. I heart Half-Life 2. (my review)

#4: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - For years, I've heard Ocarina of Time lauded as The Greatest Game. I played the first 45 minutes of it on the Wii virtual console and haven't had a chance to go back yet. But I plan to.

#2: Tetris - I can understand how innovative a game it is, and I know how addictive it is. So I'll buy this one, even if I'd never have thought to make it my #2.

#1: Super Mario Brothers - Given that I was playing this game yesterday on the Wii Virtual Console, and given that I just got up to world 4-2 for the first time, I'll accept this as first place, although my #1 would likely have been Half-Life 2 or Beyond Good and Evil.
