New Television Shows 2014

May 19, 2014 -

Last week was upfront week, in which tv networks release info on upcoming shows so they can sell ad space. So now we know about new shows. I'm going to list out some info, but only about the shows I care about, because "Bad Judge" just sounds idiotic.

There are a lot of comic book TV shows this year. I guess the success of Marvel movies is sending a message. I had been going to write about the new shows Hieroglyph and Scorpion, but lost interest after reading more about them. I'm just glad to see that The Newsroom is coming back in the fall, and that in mid-June we'll see the return of both Defiance on the 19th and Falling Skies on the 22nd. Here are all the new shows.

Marvel's Agent Carter - Interesting. Another Marvel show, this one set in the 1940s. Marvel's Agents of SHIELD started rough, but really picked up as the season progressed. My current enthusiasm for Marvel may be why I'm placing Agent Carter top on my list.

"Marvel's Agent Carter," starring Captain America's Hayley Atwell follows the story of Peggy Carter. It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life--Steve Rogers. Inspired by the feature films "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," along with the short "Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter."

Extant - Astronaut Halle Berry comes back from a long space voyage to her scientist husband and robot son, but something goes science fictiony crazy. Yeah - there's still not a lot of info here, but Steven Spielberg is producing. I am interested.

The Whispers - Spielberg is involved, and it's based on a Ray Bradbury story. Hmm... intriguing. Hearing about those two offsets my initial skepticism that popped up when I heard that the show was about aliens silently invading the Earth by using our children against us. Creepy children stuff has been done poorly so often in the past. I hope this is better.

The Flash - I saw the trailer for this show last week, and while I'm happy to see a show about The Flash, I'm put off by the fact that it's a CW show. I never got into Arrow, although I've got friends who say the show is very good. Having read a DC novel with The Flash, I understand the character and his powers a bit, and I think it can be done well. Whether it will be done well is another matter entirely. The Flash is capable of running through an area so quickly that people can't tell he passed, and can move his legs so quickly that he can step on air molecules and essentially fly. Show me some of that, and I'm on board.

Gotham - A Batman prequel. Young Bruce Wayne has just lost his parents and he is sad. I'm really not sure how this one is going to go. Young James Gordon and the spunky future Batman solving crimes involving future supervillains. I'm concerned that this will be another D.C. flop.

Constantine - Apparently this is supposed to be truer to the comics than the Keanu version. We'll see how it goes.

Last Man on Earth - A Sci-fi sitcom. Somehow, this dude is literally the only guy on the planet alive. I'm not sure about this. Here's a trailer.

And that's that. Did I miss anything good?
