Greg's Awesome Mix 2015

March 26, 2015 -

I've put together a playlist of ten songs that I love. Give it a listen sometime, if you can stomach YouTube's embedded advertising, and maybe you'll find a new track or two that you like.

Here are the songs in my playlist:

  • Every Subway Car by Barenaked Ladies -
  • Instant Crush by Daft Punk - This song, like much of the music I listen to, was a slow burn for me, meaning that I didn't love it right away. The electronic voice takes a little getting used to. But when I listen now, I absolutely love the weird dissonant harmonies. And the electronic organ in the chorus just grabs me.
  • Demons by Guster - The harmonies make this one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Great acoustic guitar too. And bongos!
  • Fantasy by Earth Wind and Fire - I know, I know. But I've always loved this song's energy. Years ago, I recorded a partial A Capella cover of this and posted it online, although I kind of did it in Simlish. I'm sure it's still out there somewhere.
  • Fall Back 2U by Chromeo - The letters thing in the title is flat-out stupid. But that's kind of the band's gimmick. It's hard to imagine that they take themselves seriously when you listen to most of their lyrics. Chromeo has an electronic/disco similarity to Daft Punk, and that's probably what got my foot in the door on the band.
  • Someday by No More Kings - In Someday, Pete Mitchell sings about a young person looking forward to the greatness that he knows will be his life. Ukelele! It's one of my favorite songs by No More Kings. I'd been going to use their song Enter the Dragon, which makes great use of soundtrack elements from Bruce Lee's movie, but the song isn't on YouTube.
  • Sabotage by The Beastie Boys - One of the best music videos OF ALL TIME!
  • Fett's Vette by MC Chris - I first heard this song at PAX East, and it got stuck in my head for quite a while. Super catchy - it's got to be MC Chris's best song.
  • Dazzler by Adam WarRock - I've learned tons about comics by listening to Adam WarRock. In keeping with the largely Disco theme of this playlist, I've chosen an Adam WarRock rap about a superhero-turned-performer. You just D to the A double-Z L E!
  • Stoop Sale by MC Frontalot - It's not nerdy, and it's got more music than a lot of rap does, and that's why I chose this song for a playlist I knew I'd be sharing. It tells a cool little story with a clever ending, and the muppets in the video are cute.
