Russian Rocket Lights Up Colorado Skies

January 4, 2007 -

Russian RocketThis morning, Linda told me she'd seen some kind of meteorite or something falling. She actually saw it from bed, and got up and went over to the window to watch. I really wish she'd have woken me up.

I just found out what it was that she saw.

A Russian rocket burned up in the early morning sky over Colorado Thursday morning, prompting hundreds of calls to Law Enforcement and media outlets, including KKTV.

Descriptions range from an "unreal bright light" to a "spectacular fireworks display."

Those are just a few of the comments from people who witnessed a light show in the skies over Colorado early today.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command and the United States Northern Command -- better known as NORAD and NORTHCOM -- released a joint statement on the event at mid-morning.

Major April Cunningham says an S-L-4 rocket body re-entered the Earth's atmosphere over Colorado and Wyoming early today. Initial reports indicate a piece of the rocket landed in Riverton, Wyoming about 6:13.

Calls started pouring in to law enforcement authorities and media outlets about that time, as thousands of people witnessed streaks of light racing across the sky from north to south.

Authorities say the Russian rocket was used to launch a French satellite late last month.

There have been no reports of injuries.
