Lyrics Quiz 1
Friday, April 20th 2007 · Quiz
Since a character of the week every single Friday seems a bit much, I've decided to alternate between characters and quizzes on Fridays. Movie quote quizzes and video game quizzes are fine, but I thought I'd bring you something different this time: a song lyric quiz.
Now my musical tastes may not align well with yours, but my tastes are varied enough, and these selections mainstream enough that I imagine you'll be familiar with most of the artists, even if you don't recognise the songs.
Good luck - you can post your guesses in the comments.
- I look at the mirror
I watch it come clearer
I look like a painter behind all the grease
but painting's creating
and I'm just erasing
a crystal-clear canvas is my masterpiece - Time is a gypsy caravan
steals away the night
to leave you stranded in dreamland
Distance is a long range filter
memory a flickering light
left behind in the heartland - In the mornings, when I'm usually wide awake
I love to take a walk through the gardens and down by the lake
where I often see a duck and a drake
and I wonder as I walk by just what they'd say if they could speak
although I know that's an absurd thought - Your everlasting summer you can see it fading fast
so you grab a piece of something that you think is gonna last
you wouldn't even know a diamond if you held it in your hand
the things you think are precious I can't understand - Make a hole with a gun perpendicular
to the name of this town in a desktop globe
exit wound in a foreign nation
showing the home of the one this was written for - They invented a reason - that's why it stings
They don't think you matter
Because you don't have pretty rings - So what is love then? Is it dictated or chosen?
Does is sing like the hymns of 1000 years, or is it just pop emotion?
And if it ever was there and it left, does that mean it was never true? - Really don't mind if you sit this one out
My words but a whisper and deafness a shout
I may make you feel, but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink - You consider me a young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger - Skiddle-eh Be-Bop we rock, scooby doo
Guess what, America? We love you
Cause you rocked and rolled with so much soul
You could rock till you're a hundred and one years old
I don't mean to brag, I don't mean to boast
But we like hot butter on our breakfast toast
5. Ana Ng - TMBG (Time Index 0:12-0:27)
8. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull (Time Index 0:41-1:10)
9. *ISN'T* Zlad! - Elektronik Supersonik (Time Index 2:34-2:40)
4. That Steely Dan song with the chorus that goes "Are you reeling in the heat?" or maybe it's "Are you reeling in the years?" I don't know.
9. That Police Song "Wrapped Around My Finger". Well at least that's how the chorus goes.
1 - This is When I Fall by Barenaked Ladies. I love this song.
2 - Nobody got this one - it's a Rush song from my favorite album of theirs, Roll the Bones. The song's called Dreamline.
3 - Yep, this is an excerpt from Conjunction Junction by Schoolhouse Rock
4 - This is actually the first song I ever remember hearing in my life - I'm sure my dad played it for me a million times when I was three. Reelin' in the Years by Steely Dan.
5 - Ana Ng by They Might Be Giants
6 - Can't believe nobody got the Jonathan Coulton song. It's I'm Your Moon, written about Pluto losing its status as a planet.
7 - Mystery by The Indigo Girls - great tune
8 - Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull
9 - Wrapped Around Your Finger by The Police
10 - Another one I was hoping somebody would recognise. Don't you know Rappers' Delight??
