Character of the Week, May 18th - Keyop

May 18, 2007 -

KeyopToday's character of the day is Keyop from Battle of the Planets, one of my favorite cartoons as a child. Rewatching the cartoons as an adult, I've realized how brutally violent they actually were, but there's still a soft spot in my heart for Mark, Jason, Princess, Tiny, and Keyop.

Keyop was a weird kid with what is perhaps the worlds strangest speech impediment. Before the majority of his spoken sentences, he was compelled to utter "Brrrr-uu too too!", not unlike Buck Rogers's Twiki.

The whole G-Force team were oddities, with their feathered costumes and space-plane that could intentionally burst into flames, but none were odder than Keyop.

OK, the good news is you didn't have to see G-Force which was the worst adaption. The original Japanese series is called Gatchaman. The real character names are Ken Washio, Joe Asakura, Jun, Jinpei, and Ryu Nakanishi. We own the complete series (105 ep.) and my 6-year old and I enjoy it greatly. In the original Keyop is far less anoying and does not have any kind of Turet Syndrome. Battle of the planets is heavily edited so I am recommending the original material.
P.S. I'm completely hooked on that Tower defense game. Wow, it's a fun game.
