Two weeks ago, I reinstalled Starcraft, and I'm now midway through the original Zerg campaign. Today, Blizzard announced Starcraft 2, and across the world, there were a thousand geekgasms. The original is the undisputed best Real-time strategy game ever made. It's nearly a decade old, and it's still very playable. Honestly, it's still probably the best RTS out there. I recently tried Supreme Commander and was very disappointed. Ditto Rise of Legends, Dragonshard, and Mechcommander 2.
StarCraft II continues the epic saga of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. These three distinct and powerful races will clash once again in the fast-paced real-time strategy sequel to the legendary original, StarCraft. Legions of veteran, upgraded, and brand-new unit types will do battle across the galaxy, as each faction struggles for survival.
Featuring a unique single-player campaign that picks up where StarCraft: Brood War left off, StarCraft II will present a cast of new heroes and familiar faces in an edgy sci-fi story filled with adventure and intrigue. In addition, Blizzard will again offer unparalleled online play through Battle.net, the company's world-renowned gaming service, with several enhancements and new features to make StarCraft II the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game.
The site showcases a small number of Protoss units in the new game. The Zealots are still there, same as ever. But Dragoons have disappeared as part of the Brood War storyline, and have been replaced by Immortals, which are similar but apparently more powerful. The Dark Templar counterpart to the Immortal is the Stalker, which can teleport using its psionic powers.
The Phase Prism is apparently a new Protoss vehicle which acts as both a transport and as a Pylon substitute. And the Protoss Gateway, a structure found in the original Starcraft, now not only teleports in new troops - it can now teleport them across the battlefield.
I'm more excited for this game than I've been for anything else in a long time. And I'm perhaps looking forward to it even more than Fallout 3. Pop over to Blizzard's Starcraft 2 website and check it out.
