How to Stop an Exploding Man

May 22, 2007 -

I've been excited for this one for a while. And way back at the start of the hiatus, just after Peter's vision, I predicted the ending, but then forgot all about it when the show threw us all the curveballs - my prediction seemed pretty far-fetched.

So where to start? So much going on. First off, we know Mr. Bennett's first name. You can still call him HRG if you like, but we know know that his first name is Noah. It actually seems really fitting.

HeroesA few thoughts: at one point in the episode, Nikki finds Candace and an apparently injured Micah. During the fight, Nikki learns that her superstrength isn't only usable by Jessica - she can use it too. I'm sure we'll see more of that next season. The interesting thing about all this to me is that when the Candace that looked like Jessica was knocked unconscious, she reverted to skinny Candace. As we know from the most recent episode, Candace is overweight in her true form and only looks attractive via her power. So why would she have not reverted to fat Candace? I guess you could argue that skinny-Candace was her resident self-image, and that her unconscious mind shows her in that form.

Candace's illusion ability could actually be overwhelmingly powerful if used correctly. Just imagine if Sylar had gotten it as he did in the alternate future. Remember what Candace did to keep Micah from escaping? She can make anyone see anything she wants. Ground where there's a cliff, dozens of attackers where there are none, invisibility... there really doesn't seem to be much of a limit.

HeroesAnd that brings me to another thought - the way in which Heroes makes creative new uses of generic superpowers. Of course the first one that comes to mind is Sylar's telekinesis. Early on, he learned to use it for cutting by focusing the power in a tiny area. Despite all the places I've seen telekinesis in science fiction, I can't say I've seen that before. And did you see in the finale how he used his telekinesis to move the paint on the canvas? That was incredible. Other powers, such as Nikki/Jessica's split personality superstrength and Isaac's foresight only via painting, are also really creative. The closest thing to Nathan's badass flight I'd ever seen was Neo in the Matrix sequels. And I hope we see more of Hana next season. Remember her? The girl who showed up to talk to Ted Sprague? She can communicate wirelessly, essentially talking to the internet. I'm sure Heroes will come up with some creative new characters in their spinoff, Origins, but how likable they are remains to be seen.

HeroesThe final showdown between Peter and Sylar wasn't bad. I almost wish it could've been better, but the truth is that while Peter can take nearly unlimited punishment, Sylar cannot. He can stop bullets, but when Peter absorbed Nikki's superstrength and started beating on him, that had to hurt. And speaking of stopping the bullets, Sylar's reversal of Matt's gunshots was pretty damn cool. We'll see whether or not Matt lives. Bah - you know he will. As will DL and Mr. Bennett, who were also shot.

HeroesIn the end, it looks like Nathan was redeemed. I'd really started to think that he and his mother would be major bad guys next season. But it seems that while Nathan had been claiming that no one could stop The Bomb, he was primarily trying to convince himself. And in the end, he wasn't convinced. I've heard claims that they both could have survived - Nathan could've dropped Peter and flown to a safe distance, and Peter could have healed - but I very much doubt it. As soon as Peter had the vision of himself as a hospice nurse giving the speech about death, I knew that he would die.

Hiro had some great moments - his blink-in-blink-out encounter with Sylar in Isaac's loft, his midair teleport to escape being crushed, and his time with Ando when Ando told him "You look badass". But I've got to say, the way he stabbed Sylar was lame. Does anyone else think they gave Sylar a Darth Maul death? Let me explain.

HeroesDarth Maul was the most badass villain in Star Wars history, despite how horrible the movie he appeared in was. He took on two experienced Jedi as if it were nothing and looked good doing it. But then, when it really counted, he stood there and watched while Obi-Wan cut him in two, and didn't make a move to stop it. Ditto with Sylar. He can force-choke the uber-powerful Peter while stopping multiple incoming bullets that were fired behind him. What kind of reaction time does that take? And then he stands there and watches while a wimpy little Japanese guy charges him and runs him through. This is my only real complaint about the episode. Why could Hiro not have stopped time and done it? It would've been way more believable.

HeroesAnd now Hiro is in ancient feudal Japan. Kyoto in 1671. Generations. I can't wait for next season. I still want to see Hiro slow time down to a crawl and get into a massive swordfight. The eclipse upon his arrival was obviously significant, but why? Will there be superpowered individuals in the past? Will he meet his sword saint hero?

I'm looking forward to watching season two and learning who this guy is who's "even worse than the boogie man". Someone who can see Molly when she thinks about him. Obviously not someone we've seen before. I've got to get on the Heroes site soon and catch up on the graphic novels.

With all the characters they killed off at the end, there's certainly space for a lot of new characters next season, and they'll certainly need a new plot. But who are the villains? This new boogieman likely isn't the only one. Candace could certainly make a return. Mrs. Petrelli hasn't yet shown her power. And maybe the OWI isn't entirely defunct - it couldn't have had only three members. We shall see.

I had a "Heroes" marathon last night, watching all five post-hiatus episodes in one shot. Wow.

I, too, was curious about who Molly would consider worse than the Boogeyman. When she tries to see where he is, she can feel him watching back? I think it's Sauron.

I don't think Nathan would have dropped Peter (though the thought certainly occurred to me) and I'll tell you why: He had no way of knowing just when Peter was going to explode. I don't think he would have risked dropping Peter from umpteen-thousand feet only to have him fall to Earth before he detonated. Unless, I suppose, he dropped him far out over the ocean.

I agree that Hiro stabbing Sylar could have been much cooler and certainly more dramatic. Unless Syler wanted to be stabbed for some reason, which would certainly explain why he allowed it to happen.

I also agree about HGM's (is that what the cool kids call him, a la CSM from "The X-Files"?) first name.

It's a good show, the season finale was very satisfying and I'm eager to see both the spin-off and "Generations".

I'd totally forgotten when I was writing this that there was a blood trail leading to a manhole - did Sylar survive??

Comment Tue, May 22 - 3:45 PM by KJToo
It would appear the Sylar has survived, so I'm sure he'll have a role to play in Volume Two. How big that role will be remains to be seen.

There's the beginning of a conversation on this over at The Harping Monkey; you should join in.

Oh, and apologies for HGM/HRG. I'm not cool enough to get my initialisms straight.

It does seem that everyone thinks Syler survived, but who knows, he could have died in the sewer, eaten by the Rat King or maybe the Turtles killed him.

KJToo...I loved the Sauron bit, very nice.

Maybe Phillip Bauer can be the villain next season. Or better yet, the 24 writers can take over and just give everyone more civics lessons for an entire season, that would be so great. Note Sarcasm.

Greg...you are absolutely right about the lame death. I may have to buy the DVD just to listen to what the writers say about that. Also, I think I have to buy the DVD just so I can sit back before vol2 starts and watch them all in like 2 nights time.

Will we ever learn how the eclipse ties into everything? If you read those interviews from comicbookresources.com, the writers talk about a bunch of different mythology, especially native australian (i think), where they talk about the Dreaming alot. Maybe my summer project will be to research more into it.

anyways, i will stop now, i have rambled enough. i told people in my blog to come over and join these comments, and if people on yours want to, they are more than welcome to jump over to mine and toss out some opinions, the more the merrier, or something like that.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the lone horseman in 1671 Kyoto is George Takei. This is completely unfounded except for me viewing what little could be seen of the actor's face and thinking "George?" I spoke with George Takei in person years ago (sometime after Star Trek IV), he was very polite and actually spent time talking one-on-one with people.

I've never really liked the Niki/Jessica storyline and felt that Micha is written too adult-like. I still liked the Niki/Impostor Jessica throw-down though. I'm wondering if the Jessica personality had to martyr herself to grant Niki her super strength... and I feel the scene would have been stronger if it was obvious that she had. I did notice that Jessica wasn't in the mirror after she freed Micha.

A scene I really liked but doesn't stand out was where Nathan and his mother took Claire to Nathan's office to pick up some papers. There they started talking about the explosion and what is to come. This scene reminded me very much of Return of the Jedi where Vader presents Luke to the emperor... Claire fighting for the soul of her father while her grandmother coldly criticizes her and dominates her son to keep him in check. You can really see Nathan questioning his role and how tightly his mother holds the leash. Even with Nathan remaining fairly expressionless (all his emotion is conveyed in either a look at a person or an object), a very well acted scene. When Heroes first started, I looked at Claire's adoptive family trying to keep her secret from the world and figured her to be a 'Clark Kent'. I can see now the character is really more of a 'Luke Skywalker'.

As far as Syler goes, I didn't notice the lame defeat until after you had mentioned it. Personally, I felt it was better to give Hiro his moment in the sun and show him best Syler honorably as opposed to just hearing "Slice" and have Syler turn around to see Hiro had already 'slain' him. Going back though, it does read as "Turn around, stand there, and let me stab you!"

PMD...Wow,I never made the connection between Claire and Luke before, but now that you mention it, I really like that...also, Kring said in interview that Nathan (adrian Pasdar, I think that's his name) is an amazing actor, and that if you watch the episode set five years in the future, when Nathan is really Syler, I guess Pasdar studied tons of scenes of Syler's mannerisms and little things just to perfect it...but yeah, after rewatching the scene you mentioned, it's cool to see the conflict he is facing. anyways, i may copy that part and put it in the comments on mine, if you do not care too much.

Know what Paul? You're right. George Takei is either the man on the horse or someone else in that time. But I don't think he's playing Hiro's great great great great great great great great great grandfather. I think he's still Hiro's father. That's his power - he's like The Highlander. He doesn't age. Starting to feel like Back to the Future...

Wanna talk about lame deaths?

ALEC GUINNESS... WORS ACTER EVAR!!1!

The duel between Vader and Obi-Wan was totally lame! When the time came for Obi-Wan to die, it's like he said 'This is where my character dies' and he stopped moving. WTF was THAT!?!?!? At least pretend you are pulling back for a swing and wait to get hit. DON'T JUST F-ING STAND THERE!!!!

As far as Syler goes, he totally meant to get stabbed. He can see the future, so he knew he wouldn't die.

My only complaints about the episode have already been echoed here. I think Hiro's fight with Sylar would have been much cooler if he had teleported in to deliever the killing blow instead of jogging 6 feet. Sylar should have seen that coming, he had read the comic and already knew Hiro wanted to kill him.

Also, and this one still kills me, is why Peter couldn't fly himself out of the city. Even Kring doesn't have an answer for it. I suppose he can only have one power active at a time but we've seen him chain abilities together before.

Overall this was an excellent first season, this is going to be a rough summer without any new Heroes to look forward to.
