Sylar

October 9, 2007 -

Zachary Quinto plays one of the best villains I've seen. Sylar, dressed up in his Matrix-like trenchcoat, flipping armored cars with his telekinesis and cutting open peoples' heads was seriously badass. I'm a bit sad that they waited until the third episode this season to start his storyline, but I'm even sadder that he apparently won't be on cast all season, due largely to Quinto having to play the new Spock in a Star Trek remake. I only hope that his character fades into the background rather than dying.

In last night's episode of Heroes, we saw Sylar return, hanging out with a remade Candice Wilmer, now going by the name of Michelle, on a make-believe beach that turned out to be a run-down warehouse in the middle of a jungle. Gone is his telekinesis, gone are his freezing and liquification abilities. Gone too are his eiditic memory and super-hearing, as well as Ted's nuclear ability and Isaac's precognitive painting. His powers seem to have reset, which to me seems a brilliant curveball, although I'm not sure if it's actually the case.

Two alternate theories about Sylar's powers. First, perhaps he's actually in a cell at Primatech or elsewhere, similar to the cell he was in during the first season episode "Fallout", in which he was unable to use his abilities. And perhaps Candice is actually watching from outside the cell, making him think he sees everything he's seeing. Not sure I like that theory. The other stems from the fact that Candice said that Sylar's powers would eventually return with enough rest and recooperation. If so, it seems possible that this jungle is not far from Maya and Alejandro as they make their way from South America up to the U.S. and that perhaps the three of them will meet.

I think your second theory is more likely. I doubt Candice would have shown him her true form even if she needed to deceive him. She detests herself far too much to do that.

Before he bashed her brains in, my initial thought was that she used her powers to create an illusion in himself that he could not use his powers. Does that make any sense?

The main reason I thought that was because of her sexual advances, which seemed to say "if I can trust you, you can have your power back."

But, after he smashed her head with a coffee cup, I really have no clue what's wrong with him.
