What? Psychonauts 2 in development? I wish you could see my dopey smile. In terms of upcoming games, only Beyond Good and Evil 2 or Baldurs Gate 3 could make me happier. Or maybe Half-Life 3.
EDIT: Joystiq reports that the rumors are false. No Psychonauts sequel. I am sad.
Fans of Psychonauts were excited to see numerous reports of an image on the studio’s website that featured a darkened logo for Psychonauts with the ominous words “COMING SOON” plastered across it.
Some have speculated a sequel to the game, while others have said this is Double Fine’s way of quietly hinting that a Wii port is on the cards.
In an e-mail to Next-Gen, Schafer rained on everybody's parade, explaining, "Man, who knew how much excitement a little darkness could bring? The truth is we are just putting together a new page about 'The Excellent Game Psychonauts.' We're not announcing any new games or anything. Sorry if we confused anybody! We lightened up the image to hopefully make things clearer."
Psychonauts, which released in 2005 on PC, Xbox and PS2, was a critically-acclaimed platformer that boasted compelling characters with a psychic twist. It fell short at retail, but today is revered by some as one of the most under-appreciated games of recent times.
The FAQ on Double Fine’s (rather hilarious) website also claims that a sequel to Psychonauts isn't exactly on the company roadmap right now. "We'd love to [make a sequel] someday. If anyone out there has a few million dollars burning a hole in their pocket, and would like to help us make an Excellent Sequel to Psychonauts, please let us know!"
Currently, Double Fine is working on its next title, Brutal Legend.
