How To Play The World Ends With You

May 22, 2008 -

I've been playing The World Ends With You for a good week now, and I'm finally figuring out how to play. For those of you unfamiliar with this game, it's a Nintendo DS game in which a couple Japanese teenagers who get sucked into a supernatural "game" against their will. They have to stay alive for seven days, fulfilling a quest each day and battling monsters called "noise".

The World Ends With YouBattles take place on both screens simultaneously, and although you can set the upper screen to "auto-play", I wanted to know how to play it myself. The bottom-screen attacks are fairly self-explanatory. You equip "pins", and those are your weapons. Using these, you can slash, tap, and draw your attacks against the enemies. Moving your guy around with the stylus takes getting used to, but it's not too bad.

The things that were initially confusing to me were how to fight on the upper screen, how to use cards and fusion attacks, what that number at the bottom-right of the screen was, and how exactly scoring for battles worked. I figured out pretty quickly that there was a "light puck" that gets passed up and down between the two characters on the two screens. Whomever's got it does more damage. Weird... but okay. And I eventually figured out that the number at the bottom-right is the "drop level" - the higher it is, the better chance of enemies dropping useful items. You can do things to raise or lower it. For example, you can intentionally lower your character level from the game's phone menu. When you're lower level, you obviously do less damage and have less hit points, but the enemies drop better stuff.

One of the things that really threw me off was that you can't do everything right away. Towards the beginning of the game, you can't even access the menu! Not until the game teaches you how to access the menu. Eventually, it the game does a good job of teaching you (almost) everything. My frustration came largely from my impatience - I'd wanted to do all the cool stuff right away.

For example, one of the cool things is what the game calls "fusion attacks". At first, you can see that on the upper screen, there are different paths marked by arrows, and based on the direction you hit the D-pad, you'll follow different routes and arrive at different symbols. But you've got no idea what any of it is for, or how to use it! I just finished figuring this all out today. Ignoring the symbols, you can mash the D-pad left or right to attack enemies to the character's left or right. Once the game starts letting you use fusion attacks, you'll see three blank cards at the top of the upper screen. Each card will have a hidden symbol. When you use the D-pad to follow a path and reach a symbol, the corresponding card (if there is one) at the top of the screen will flip over. Flip all three cards, and a fusion attack symbol will appear at the top of the lower screen. Tap that symbol to use the fusion attack. Yeah - it took me a while.

I still haven't figured out how exactly pins evolve and haven't yet messed with using the shoulder buttons to toggle pins, but I'm sure I'll get there. Also, sometimes little arrows with letters appear above the enemies, and I've got no idea what those mean.

Above all, the game is weird. I definitely recommend it, but it's weird. You buy clothes, and the ones that are currently in style give you more bonuses. This one girl attacks with a stuffed animal. And you get experience points for not playing. When you turn the game on, you'll get points for each hour since you last played, up to 7 days. Yeah, it's weird. But I've had the game's main song, Calling stuck in my head all day.

This game sounds like it would make my brain explode. It looks fun, but I'm sure I'd have a seizure while playing or something.

I do like their XP system though. I wish WoW had the same feature, I might have gotten more sleep!

Come to me my son, and learn the ways of the pin evolution!

First of all, not all pins can evolve. You can check if a pin can evolve by looking at the Info 2 tab.

If a pin can evolve, it can evolve via three different ways, via being used in battle (BP), by being equipped when you shut off your DS (SD) or activity points (AC) which are points you get by equipping pins and putting your DS in Mingle Mode and coming across another DS wireless signal or playing Ten Pin Slammer over the wireless connection.

The way that evolution works is that you have to level the pin all the way up and if the majority of the experience points to level it up are what the pins need to evolve, it'll evolve. When you look at the pin you can see what kind of points have been used to level up the pin by looking at the bar under the pin's current level (right side of the display if I remember correctly). SD points are green, BP are blue and AC are red. I may have the colors of the SD and BP mixed up so double check what I'm telling you.

So, let's take Ice Blow, pin numero uno as an example. It evolves via shutdown points to Ice Risers (a pretty damn effective pin). Because Ice Blow evolves via shutdown points, you can use it in battle, but you're going to want to equip it before you shut your DS off so that it gets the majority of the experience points as SD points. Once you level it up completely, voila! No more Ice Blow, hello Ice Risers.

Given that you can't play Ten Pin Slammer over the WiFi connection, evolving pins via Action Points is a huge pain in the ass, but with patience and the Wii's ability to send demos to your DS, it can be done.

For pins that need to evolve via Battle Points, just keep equipping them and using them to fight Noise and once you've got them half way evolved, start equipping them when you shut down so that you can finish off the evolution via SD points.

A strategy guide really helps in this regard so that you can see what each pin needs to evolve. The amount of SD points you get each day diminishes, so to maximize your xp drops from SD points, be sure to turn your DS on every day, even if you're not going to play, get the XP drops and then save it again.

To maximize your pin experience you really need to stay on top of which pins you've mastered, and which pins still need to evolve, but if you're an equipment junkie like me, the pin management becomes a fun game in and of itself.

Ok, now on to Sub slots.

The way that the pins work is that each pin has it's own boot up time, basically the time it takes until you can use it. Along with this, each pin has a certain number of uses until it has to reboot. Finally, each pin requires a certain action in order for Neku to use the power, be it slashing or tapping or whatever.

If you equip two pins that require the same action to fire it off, the game would be confused as to which pin you actually want to use when you tap the screen, so instead of allowing you to use both at once, it defers to the first pin that uses that action. Once that pin has been used and is rebooting, the action will fire off the second pin, provided that the second pin is ready for use.

This can be a bit of a pain as you may never be able to use that second pin if the reboot time of the first is small, or the startup time for the second is long.

Enter the sub slot! By selecting an equipped pin and pressing either shoulder button, you'll designate that pin as being in a sub slot. When in battle, you can't use the pin in the sub slot until you press the shoulder button. The benefit of this is that if you have two pins with the same attack equipped, and one is in a sub slot, neither pin takes the status of the other into effect for usage. As long as you press the shoulder button, you can use your sub pin to attack, even if the first pin is ready to be used.

I don't use sub slots that often, as I try to have a variety of attacks types, but when I have used it, it's very effective. I don't know if there's a reason to use sub slots outside of what I've mentioned here. I'll have to see.

Wow - thanks for all the info! I hadn't realized that certain pins evolve with different types of points.

My contribution:

Calling - Leah
----------------
Calling
You hear the calling
Calling
You hear the calling

Let me go, gravity - What's on my shoulder?
Little by little, I feel a bit better
Let me know, set me free, feel a bit older
Just once more to the breach, dear friend, once more

Wake up
Leave your hesitation
Wake up
Time for us to realize
Wake up
Show appreciation
Wake up
Time for us to realize

Calling
Someone is calling
Calling
Someone is calling

Wait and see, empathy - You're not the only
Little by little you feel a bit better
Back in the destiny, you are my side
Just once more to the breach, dear friend, once more

Wake up
Leave your hesitation
Wake up
Time for us to realize
