Star Wars Trivia

June 6, 2008 -

Kris Johnson has been Twittering a whole lot of Star Wars trivia recently. It got me going along that track, and it seemed like a passable Friday quiz.

Now, I've become very aware that my own level of Star Wars knowledge doesn't nearly approach his, plus I want people who read the quiz to have a chance at knowing the answers, so I'm asking mostly questions to which I already knew the answers.

  1. What was the name of Episode 4?
  2. What planet in the Star Wars movies is a gas giant?
  3. What was the name of Princess Leia's foster father, played by Jimmy Smits in the new trilogy?
  4. What are the last names of Luke's friends Biggs and Wedge?
  5. What does AT-AT stand for?
  6. What was the name of the creature that caught Luke on Hoth and hung him upside down in the ice?
  7. What is the name of the Wookiee homeworld?
  8. What was the designation of the StormTrooper in Episode 4 that wasn't at his post?
  9. What does TIE stand for?
  10. What was the name of Jabba the Hut's band?

To avoid potentially spoiling this for others, I'll send you my answers via e-mail.

To be fair, I pretty much memorized The Jedi Master's Quizbook by Rusty Miller when I was a kid.

I was a pretty big SW geek back in the day. Even still, some details escape me. Here's the best I can do:

1. A New Hope
2. Bespin
3. Bale Organa
4. Darklighter and Antilles (spelled right?)
5. Can't remember, All-terrain Attack something.
6. Wampa
7. Kashyyk (again, spelling sucks)
8. no clue, I'll guess THX-1138 :)
9. Twin Ion Engine
10. can't remember this one either, it'll piss me off when I see it though.

And Kris, that was one of the most entertaining books of my childhood. Right up there with The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

Okay, I have to give props to BMD for Yavin, as it had completely slipped my mind (Bespin is, indeed, a gas giant and was my answer).

I asked my wife all ten of these questions and I'm pleased to say she got them all correct.

Alas, I can't type. Sorry, PMD.

Thanks and NP, I knew Yavin was a gas giant... but I was only 99 44/100's percent sure that Bespin was too. My question is: can we assume 'The Forest Moon of Endor' also orbits a gas giant due to it's size?

Totally 'spaced' on Wedge's last name even though I knew it. I'm kicking myself.

File under "So what?" I guess--The term 'gas giant' is a misnomer. Jupiter, for example, has a thick atmosphere composed of mostly hydrogen gas and helium but the majority of the planet's mass is liquid hydrogen, possibly with a nickel-iron core (judging from the strength of the Jovian magnetic field, anyway).

I took this quiz while in the car (not a wise decision while driving through Pittsburgh). Anyways, I could not get the band's name.

All-Terrain Armored Transport.

My first thought on the gas giant was Bespin, since they mind the gas fields from cities in the clouds...

Thanks to all you folks beating me to the punch my only addition is the fact that Wedge's last name is Antilles (spelling may be suspect). I would say both on size and explanation both Yavin and Bespin both qualify in the great "gas bag" debate. Though I am leaning more towards Bespin due to Lando's being the head honcho of a facility that mines "Tabana Gas".
