Brandon recently turned me on to MC Frontalot. While I've never been a huge fan of rap or R&B, I will occasionally listen to some Beastie Boys or Eminem. And of course, I love Sugarhill Gang's Rappers Delight. Still, The Front's main appeal to me isn't the fact that he's a rapper, it's his choice of source material.
MC Frontalot coined the term "Nerdcore". And while he's not the only one who raps in that genre, he's the only nerdcore rapper to whose music I've yet listened. He raps about Zork, Penny-Arcade, pr0n, and Doom .WADs. I've also caught references to Ghostbusters, The Simpsons, Mork and Mindy, Commodore 64, G.I. Joe, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, Magic: The Gathering, and Atari 2600. I even caught a reference to A Mind Forever Voyaging, an old video game I've only ever heard of on Brainy Gamer. I'm sure if I spent some time I could come up with more, but you get the idea.
Right now, my favorite tracks are Braggadocio, Special Delivery, The Penny Arcade Theme, Goth Girls, It Is Pitch Dark, Forbidden Planet and Crime Spree. But with most artists, my favorites change with time. Most of what I like right now is on Nerdcore Rising, but Secrets From the Future is slowly growing on me.
You can catch a lot of MC Frontalot mp3 files here. Also, lots of videos on YouTube. Personally, I'm going to buy Nerdcore Rising this week.
I kid you not.
