Big Changes

October 29, 2008 - -

Although there's way too much going on in my life to document everything, here are the basics.

A few months back, the guy who hired Linda for the job that brought us to Colorado fired her, then made up a bunch of lies about her stealing stuff from the office and eating babies. He's suing us, and has a fraudulent lien on our house. Oh - and he owes us more money than I make in a year. Mostly back pay. Since the office is 3 houses down from our house, that's a big part of our impetus to move.

Linda's in business for herself now, based in Buena Vista, Colorado. This weekend, we're moving up there. Yes, up. Buena Vista, or Byoonie as many folks around here call it, is in the mountains. 7965 foot elevation. Cañon City and Colorado Springs are both in the 5400-5500 foot range I think, but BV is a bit higher. (We call Buena Vista "BV") I try to tell myself that I'm out of breath because of the altitude and not because I'm horribly out of shape.

I will say that BV is a really cute little town. It's got one traffic light, and one main street. Despite the small population, the town has more good restaurants than Cañon City by a long shot. In Cañon City, your choices are McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Arby's, Sonic, KFC, Carl's Jr., Dairy Queen, Quizno's, or if you're feeling feisty, the China Garden. In Buena Vista, we've got The Rooster, Evergreen Cafe, and the wonderful Global Cafe, where I can get a Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil panini or butternut squash ravioli. Yum!

I've got a number of contracting jobs lined up, although I haven't had much time yet to work on any of them. I've also got some part time work at an established web design shop in BV. We're canceling the cable TV and the landline phone, but I'm still a bit nervous about getting all the bills paid from month to month.

And I've got to get a new cell phone - although Nextel has great service up and down route 115, where I did my commute to Colorado Springs, but there's absolutely no reception in Buena Vista. I'll have to get a Verizon phone. I hate the extra expense of getting a new phone, and I hate having to ditch my Motorola i580, which I spent a bunch on thinking that I'd keep it for close to a decade, but them's the breaks. I am keeping my Farmington, Connecticut phone number though. Sometimes I feel like it's my only remaining link to home.

I'm really glad that we're visiting Connecticut this Christmas. It'll be great to see my parents and my brothers, and meet up with friends I haven't seen in two years. I've been in Colorado for four years now, and I have yet to make a good friend here. That's probably why it's been so difficult to find guys to help us move. A coworker graciously offered to help, as did Linda's hairstylist's husband. I don't know why they offered, but I'll take any help I can get. Probably very few people remember the story of our move to Brewster, NY, but it was a doozie. We really need at least four guys to move that piano, so I'm hoping to find someone else.

The place in BV that we'll be renting is nice. Kind of small, but very nice. There are apparently mice, although they're not nearly as bad as we had them in Brewster. And the place is mostly heated by a wood-burning stove. It gets much colder up in the mountains than in Cañon City's "banana belt", so we'll have snow much more like what we remember from New England. It's already snowed once in BV this year.

We're still trying hard to rent our house - we dropped the rent so low that we'll be losing a lot every month, but it's what we need to do. Anything's better than paying a mortgage plus a rent. Still, the house Linda designed for us is beautiful, and we'll be really sad to leave.

I feel really sad that we'll be pulling Lia out of her daycare - she's so happy there. It's gonna be really hard to watch her during the day and still get work done, and we simply won't have the time to give her the kind of education she's been getting. Granted, the "education" involves learning animal sounds and gestures for kids' songs, but that's the kind of stimulation one-and-a-half year olds need.

Our preliminary hearing in court was yesterday, and it went very well. I think the judge had an inkling that jerkface was lying through his teeth. Granted, it's only the beginning, but it sets a very good tone for the rest of the process. Next is mandatory mediation. I hope that's not too expensive.

So we'll be packing the rest of this week. Since we're downsizing, we'll have to store or get rid of a lot of stuff. And I may be too busy to write anything here for a while.

That's all I have to say about that.

As I recall, the sign at the Colorado Springs border said "6,100 feet" last time I was there. Of course, I could be mistaken. Or, sometime during the past 15 years I suppose they could have moved it. :-)

I've been waiting for this post. You know, cuz it's easier to read than to go downstairs and talk to you. Dangit! I SHOULD go talk to you. You won't be here to talk to anymore.

I'll assume you got the rental on craigslist. Verizon is great. I've been with them for years...and not just cuz I used to work for them. Also, sell your fancy phone on ebay. I've been able to sell old phones for great amounts in the past.

I am still replacing things here and there from the deevorce, so let me know what you're getting rid of.

We'll miss you around here for sure, good thing we have all these fancy internet thingamabob's to keep in touch.

Guess I got the CoSprings altitude wrong. That's why I wrote "I think".

Found the rental by word of mouth - not Craigslist. Maybe I can list our house on Craigslist though.

And when I sold Linda's great phone on EBay, I got crap for it, so I wasn't looking forward to selling mine. Although I likely will.

Greg, My heart goes out to you and Linda and Lia, I can't imagine being in that situation and its a shame that 2000+ miles separates you and the CT crew, we ALL would be there in a heartbeat. I would lone you money if I had it to give, but I have been living hand to mouth for almost a year now and I am struggling to keep what I have. Hopefully you can reverse the tables and take "Jerkface"(colorful explatives here)to the cleans. He obviously took out the sleeze book and read every chapter twice, this is a classic lawyer trick if I ever saw one, he sued you before you could sue him, going on the evidence you thus far presented. My advice is discuss a "counter suit" with Linda's lawyer. If he owes you that much money then it should be pretty easy to convince the judge in your favor. The strong shall stand. I quote Clint Eastwood "Don't give the prick the satisfaction!!!!!"

Just remember Colorado is a big place to bury a body...one less crooked lawyer eaten by a mountain lion or coyotes is not a bad thing.

We hope that things go better for you once you win your case. It is bad enough that the housing market is not doing so well for Linda to have to start over. But for you to have to find another job as well. Like the Dock says if we could help you out financially we would, but all we could do is be your Friend and support you in other ways.

And renting the place was not a bad choice to do for your situation, when you win the case, you can always up the rent in a year or so..make sure you put that in the renting lease that you have the right to increase the rent after such a date, usually a year is the time line. Not sure on the housing market in your area, but i don't think it is a good time to try to sell right now. I suggest just renting the place until the the market gets better, if you plan on selling it. Hell its a house, and by the pics i would estimate you could get 900 a month for it. estimated at CT rentals and not Co.

Best of luck,
Hope to hear from you soon Greg as soon as you get resettled.

And Dock.. LONE should be spelled loan..I been waiting a long time to correct him on some grammar technicality. (Sorry for the tangent)

How juvenile. Seriously though. Stay strong, the easiest way for evil to triumph is when good men do nothing.

Holy crap!

I'm so sorry that you're going through all this. I doubt there's much I can do from here except sympathize, but you surely do have my sympathies.

Some people just suck. :(
