Shameless Admission: I Love Eighties Music

October 17, 2013 -

There you go. I've made it a point not to write anything on this blog that I don't want everyone in the world to know. I thoroughly and shamelessly enjoy the music of the eighties. Granted, not all of it. But check it out - there was some really good stuff.

I'll fully admit that the majority of music that I enjoy and listen to was written and recorded decades ago. I'm at a point now where I discover roughly one new (to me) artist per year, and then I go back and devour their back catalog. This has happened most recently with Guster and Poets of the Fall.

But I just had my old old mp3 player (my favorite gadget of 2006) shuffling and found myself listening to The Search is Over by Survivor. I've always loved all the modulations and key changes in the piano. Absolutely brilliant writing - way more complex than you realize listening to it. I've got to learn to play that one someday.

I consider so many singers and songwriters operating during this time to be absolute musical geniuses. Geniui? Geniuses. Freddy Mercury. Stevie Wonder. And of course Billy Joel. Some of Billy Joel's least known stuff is some of his best: Souvenir, Summer, Highland Falls, You're My Home, Miami 2017. And I love his classical album, Fantasies and Delusions. Of course, that's not eighties music.

So many other greats from the eighties: The Police, Rush, U2, The Beastie Boys, Boston, Journey. I'm restraining myself from listing songs. Perhaps a bunch of their good stuff might have been in the 70s or the 90s. I didn't bother to look that up before writing this. This is a spur-of-the-moment article that I likely won't bother to even proofread. But today, I'm just listening to music in an attempt to get What Does The Fox Say? out of my head.

Men Without Hats: Safety Dance. Quite possibly one of the best 80's songs and music videos ever.

Also, so much Freddy Mercury.
