Happy 40th, Rudolph

December 1, 2004 -

On the way to work this morning, I heard on NPR that today marks the 40th anniversary of the Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special. Johnny Marks released the classic song in 1949, and 15 years later came the classic television special starring the famous Canadian-voiced reindeer and his best friend, an elf named Hermey with a penchant for dentistry. Narrated by Burl Ives and animated by a pixelation technique called Animagic, Rudolph is the longest running. highest rated special ever.

Way to make me feel old . . . this means I was a year old when the bloody SONG came out!

At least CocaCola invented Santa Claus in 1931 -- before I was born :-)

"The image we have of Santa today comes from Coca Cola. In 1931 Coca Cola hired Haddon Sundblom to do their advertisements. He put the final touches on Santa Claus. His Santa had the ruby red cheeks and a grandfather-like image that we still associate with Santa Claus."
